Malachi Whitson is a composer, bandleader, and educator based in the Bay Area, recognized for his deep groove, expressive musicality, and innovative approach to Black American Music. He has performed and collaborated with acclaimed artists such as Herbie Hancock, Gretchen Parlato, Genevieve Antari of Knower, Helen Sung, Theo Croker, Bennie Maupen, Christopher Turner, Joshua Redman, and Isaiah Collier. Whitson leads his ensemble, Something with Soul, which seamlessly blends jazz, R&B, improvisation, and story-driven composition. His debut release, Something with Soul Vol. 1, and his most recent single, "Tell me You love Me," from the upcoming Something with Soul Vol. 2, underscore his commitment to authentic, emotionally resonant artistry. As an educator, he has taught at UCLA, University of the Pacific, and public school programs throughout the Bay Area, emphasizing inclusive and culturally responsive teaching. Beyond performing and teaching, Whitson is an advocate for artist entrepreneurship and community-centered music-making. He continues to record, tour, and collaborate while actively shaping the next generation of musicians.
